The Problem With Plastic Vent Caps

A warm dryer vent is the perfect place for a nest. Plastic louvered caps fade, crack, and stick open in the sun, and that's all the invitation birds, squirrels, and mice need. A nest blocks airflow, which makes your dryer work harder and raises the fire risk.

  • Chirping or scratchingSounds coming from the wall near your laundry room.
  • Nest material at the ventTwigs, grass, or feathers poking out of the cap.
  • A flap that won't closeLouvers stuck open, cracked, or missing.
  • Slow dryingClothes need extra cycles because air can't get out.

DryerWallVent

A sleek steel cap that sits close to the wall. Comes in white, tan, brown, or black to match your house.

  • Heavy-gauge Galvalume steel with weather-resistant powder coat
  • Built-in magnets hold the damper shut against birds and rodents
  • Lightweight damper swings wide open for strong airflow
  • Quiet rubber bumpers and a built-in drip edge
  • Meets IRC and IMC dryer exhaust codes

Heavy-duty vent hood

The Defender

A tough steel hood with a row of steel bars underneath. Animals can't get in, but lint can still get out.

  • Heavy-gauge, zinc- and powder-coated steel
  • Vertical bars block birds and squirrels with no lint-trapping screen
  • Drop-notch gate opens for cleaning without coming off the wall
  • Extra weather protection from the full hood
  • Made in the USA

Why not just a screen? Screens on dryer vents catch lint and clog fast, and building codes don't allow them on dryer exhaust. Both of these caps keep animals out without a screen.

Bird Guard FAQ

How much does a bird guard vent cap cost?

$200–$225 installed. These are premium steel caps, not plastic, so it's a one-time upgrade that's built to last for the life of your home.

Will a guard restrict my dryer's airflow?

No. The DryerWallVent uses a lightweight damper that swings wide open, and The Defender uses open steel bars instead of a screen. Both let air and lint out while keeping animals out.

There's already a nest in my vent. Can you remove it?

Yes. We clear the nest and debris, clean the vent run, and then install the new cap so it doesn't happen again. See dryer vent cleaning.

Why not just put a screen over the vent?

Screens trap lint and clog quickly, which blocks airflow and creates a fire risk. Building codes don't allow screens on dryer exhaust vents. Our steel caps keep animals out without one.
