Dryer Vent Blocked on the Outside Wall: Causes and Fixes

Share

The outside vent on your wall is where all the hot, wet air from your dryer is supposed to leave the house. When it’s blocked, you get long drying times, a hot laundry room and a real fire risk. Here are the usual causes and what to do about each one.

1. Lint Buildup at the Cap

Lint collects right at the exit, especially on caps with screens or tight louvers. Fix: clear the lint by hand or with a vacuum. Screens on dryer vents clog quickly and are not recommended, so consider replacing a screened cap.

2. A Stuck or Broken Flap

The flap or louvers should open when the dryer runs and close when it stops. Paint, lint or a cracked hinge can hold them shut. Fix: clean the flap, or replace the cap if it’s damaged.

3. Birds, Nests and Rodents

A warm dryer vent is a favorite nesting spot for birds and a way in for mice and squirrels. You may hear chirping or scratching, or see nesting material sticking out. Fix: have the nest removed and the vent cleaned, then add a steel bird guard that keeps animals out without restricting airflow.

4. Snow, Ice or Landscaping

Snow drifts, ice, mulch or overgrown shrubs can cover a low vent. Fix: keep at least a foot of clear space around the vent and check it after storms.

5. A Problem Inside the Wall

If the cap is clear but airflow is still weak, the blockage is inside: packed lint in a turn, a crushed section or a duct that came apart inside the wall. Fix: this needs a full vent cleaning with tools that follow the entire run.

How to Check

Run the dryer and go outside. You should feel strong, warm airflow and see the flap open wide. Weak airflow, no airflow or a flap that barely moves means it’s time to clean the vent.
