Dryer Vent Full of Lint? How to Clean It (and When to Call a Pro)

Share

Finding a dryer vent full of lint is common. Lint that slips past the lint trap collects inside the vent every time you run the dryer. Here’s how to clean it, and how to tell when it’s more than a DIY job.

What You’ll Need

  • A vacuum with a hose attachment
  • A screwdriver or nut driver to loosen hose clamps
  • A dryer vent brush kit with flexible rods (sold at most hardware stores)

Step by Step

  1. Unplug the dryer. For a gas dryer, be careful not to bend or loosen the gas line, and turn off the gas if you need to move the dryer far.
  2. Pull the dryer out and disconnect the hose. Loosen the clamp at the back of the dryer and at the wall.
  3. Clean the hose. Vacuum it out or replace it. Plastic or foil accordion hoses should be replaced with semi-rigid or rigid metal duct, which is safer and catches less lint.
  4. Clean the vent from inside. Feed the brush into the wall opening and rotate it as you push, then pull the lint back out and vacuum it up.
  5. Clean the outside vent. Remove lint from the outside cap and make sure the flap opens and closes freely.
  6. Reconnect and test. Run the dryer and check for strong airflow outside.

When to Call a Professional

  • The vent run is long or has several turns
  • The vent exits through the roof or a second floor
  • You still have weak airflow after cleaning
  • There is a nest, a crushed section or a disconnected duct inside a wall or ceiling
  • You have a burning smell or the dryer shuts off from overheating

Most DIY kits only reach the first several feet, and pushing a brush too hard can pack lint into a turn or pull apart a joint inside the wall. A professional cleaning covers the entire run and confirms the airflow afterward.
