Bird Nest in Your Dryer Vent? Safe Removal in NJ

Share

Every spring, birds across New Jersey go looking for a warm, sheltered place to build a nest, and a dryer vent on the side of a house is perfect. If you hear chirping or scratching behind the laundry room wall, or see twigs and grass sticking out of the vent outside, you probably have a nest.

Why a Nest in Your Dryer Vent Is Dangerous

  • Fire risk. Twigs, grass and feathers mixed with lint are very flammable, and a nest can block the vent completely.
  • Overheating and long drying times. With nowhere for hot air to go, the dryer overheats and clothes stay wet.
  • Carbon monoxide risk with gas dryers. A blocked vent can push exhaust back into the house.
  • Mites and odors. Nests can bring bird mites, droppings and smells indoors.

If you think there’s a nest in your vent, stop using the dryer until it’s cleared.

Can I Remove It Myself?

Some birds are protected by federal law, so if there are eggs or chicks in the nest, call a professional before removing anything. The species that most often nest in dryer vents, like starlings and house sparrows, are not protected, but it’s worth being sure. Nests are also often deeper in the vent than you can reach, and pulling on them can tear the duct or push debris further in.

How We Remove Dryer Vent Nests

  1. We check the outside vent and what’s inside before we start.
  2. We remove the nest and all the debris, then clean the entire vent run, inside to outside.
  3. We test the airflow to make sure the vent is fully clear.
  4. We install a steel bird guard ($200–$225 installed) so birds and rodents can’t get back in.

Keep Birds Out for Good

Plain plastic flaps break and birds push right past them. A steel guard designed for dryer vents keeps animals out while letting lint and air through. Avoid putting a screen over a dryer vent, since screens clog with lint and become a fire hazard.

We remove dryer vent nests across New Jersey, from Middlesex and Monmouth to Ocean County and the shore towns, where nesting is especially common.
